A few years ago "Blue Light" was the latest optical topic that was being discussed whenever I attended an optical seminar. Now, I see Blue Light advertisements in magazines and TV commercials. I'm still attending seminars on the effects of Blue Light till this day. But, is Blue Light that big of a deal? |
How the Eye Perceives the Light Spectrum
On the Light Spectrum, Blue Light runs from 380-500nm. Where this stands on the spectrum is right between harmful uv light and beneficial visible light, which is light that enters our eyes. Studies have shown Blue Light helps regulate melatonin, which helps with our sleep/wake cycle and mood. We need Blue Light in moderation, but studies also find that too much Blue Light can be harmful. |
Smartphones, tablets, laptops are all devices that the majority of us spend countless hours a day using. Whether you use these devices for work, home, or both. All of these devices give off Blue Light. At the end of your day, are you getting too much?
My Recommendation for Everyone
When these lenses first came out, the lenses were a slight yellow. These yellowish lenses did not look good cosmetically and at that time I would only recommend them as a separate pair for individuals that would be using them while at work or work related tasks. Today, Blue Light technology has come a long way. The lenses are almost clear and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart from your primary pair. While studies have shown that too much Blue Light can effect your inner clock for sleeping, it is important to have the right eyewear to protect your eyes from blue light emitting devices. However, the debate continues on how harmful Blue Light is to your retinas.
